Tips: Why do you need a switching power supply?
The power supply is determined according to the needs, involving factors such as power consumption (heat generation), withstand voltage and cost. 5v is too low for high-power occasions, or occasions requiring thousands of volts of high voltage, which will lead to excessive current and excessive power consumption of the device. For occasions requiring low power consumption, such as computer processors, the voltage is too high. So, even within an appliance, several voltages may be required. For example, the computer motherboard needs 12v, 5v, -5v, 3.3v, or even 1v and other voltages. It is not possible to fix a certain voltage.
In many occasions, the direct current needs to be transformed twice or even multiple times. For example, laptops, in order to be portable, generally use an external switching power supply to convert 220v mains into about 20v direct current, and then use them for laptops. And the computer needs to turn 20v into 12v, 5v, 3.3v and other necessary voltages. Because in power applications, electromagnetic transformation is basically required for voltage transformation. The principle of electromagnetic transformation requires that the magnetic field must be transformed (cutting magnetic lines of force), that is, the power supply must be transformed or pulsated to generate corresponding alternating or pulsating magnetic fields. However, the DC power supply is stable. Therefore, the DC pulse must be obtained through the continuous switching of the power tube, so as to realize the electro-magnetic-electric conversion. This process itself is a switching power supply. In short, DC-DC conversion must be realized by switching power supply.
