    Single phase induction motor working principle

     

    Through the relative movement of the rotating magnetic field generated by the stator and the rotor winding, the rotor winding cuts the magnetic field lines to generate an induced electromotive force so that an induced current is generated in the rotor winding. The induced current in the rotor winding interacts with the magnetic field to generate electromagnetic torque, which makes the rotor rotate. Because when the rotor speed gradually approaches the synchronous speed, the induced current gradually decreases, and the generated electromagnetic torque also decreases accordingly. When the asynchronous motor works in the motor state, the rotor speed is less than the synchronous speed. In order to describe the difference between the rotor speed n and the synchronous speed n1, the slip is introduced.

    Types of induction motors

     

    Induction motors, also known as asynchronous motors, are available as single-phase induction motors and three-phase induction motors. So what is the difference between them?

    Working principle:

    • The principle of a single phase induction motor is that when a single phase sinusoidal current passes through the stator windings, the motor will generate an alternating magnetic field. The strength and direction of the magnetic field change sinusoidally with time, but its orientation in space is fixed, so this magnetic field is also called an alternating pulsating magnetic field.
    • A three phase motor means that when the 3 phase stator windings of the motor (each phase differs by 120 degrees in electrical angle) are connected to three phase alternating current, a rotating magnetic field will be generated, which cuts the rotor windings.

    Definition:

    • 1 phase induction motors usually have two-phase windings on the stator, and the rotor is a common squirrel cage. The distribution of the two-phase windings on the stator and the different power supply conditions can produce different starting characteristics and operating characteristics.
    • 3 phase induction motor means that when the 3 phase stator windings of the motor (each phase differs by 120 degrees in electrical angle) are connected to 3 phase alternating current, a rotating magnetic field will be generated. The rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor windings to generate electricity. It includes three phase synchronous motors and three phase asynchronous motors.
