Tips: How Does a Geiger Counter Work?

A Geiger counter consists of a geiger mueller tube (the sensing element which detects the radiation) and the processing electronics, which displays the result. The tube is filled with an inert gas such as helium, neon, or argon at low pressure, to which a high voltage is applied. The tube briefly conducts electrical charge when a particle or photon of incident radiation makes the gas conductive by ionization. The ionization is considerably amplified within the tube by the Townsend discharge effect to produce an easily measured detection pulse, which is fed to the processing and display electronics. This large pulse from the tube makes the Geiger counter relatively cheap to manufacture, as the subsequent electronics are greatly simplified. The electronics also generate the high voltage, typically 400–900 volts.

I‘m glad I bought the detector and I'd like to know more details on it.
I was recently exposed to a radiation source while carrying one of your products, the JD-3001 . I am so thankful to your company for making this equipment available to me, and you have probably saved my life. The unit said that I was exposed to as much as 10 mSv/h for 30 minutes and that I received an ACC of 17 mSv . I was hoping you could inform me of how accurate these readings are at such high levels of radiation? If you could please return correspondence as to how accurate the nuclear readings are for emissions in the 5-15 mSv/h range it would be greatly appreciated.

    ATO Responded
The accuracy data of JD-3001 are as follows:
    Dose rate response: <±20% (1μSv/h~99.99mSv/h)
    Energy response: <±30% (48KeV~1.3MeV)
    Relative inherent error: <±15% (137Cs)
    Great Portable Geiger Counter
The nuclear radiation detector is a very good all-rounder Geiger counter. Mostly mine gets used as a desk toy but the internal battery lasts for over a week of continuous measurement, and the internal logging keeps records back nearly as long, so it's very easy to toss in a bag and take with you as well.
