Tips: Running a 3-phase motor from single phase supply

If you want to connect a 3-phase motor to a single phase power supply, then you have several solutions:

  • Professional: use a VFD with single phase input and convert to 3-phase output, this is generally available for low power VFD (few horsepower).
  • Professional: apply a specially wound transformer that also mimic a 3-phase system from a single phase power supply. Expect difficulties to source and high price.
  • DIY: calculate a capacitor that will be connected between the remaining phases, such to apply it a phase shift and to mimic a 3-phase system.

Practical VFD
This single-phase VFD has quite complete functions. Anyway, I am looking for a wiring diagram to hook up an external potentiometer to control motor speed.

You can externally connect a potentiometer with a resistance of 4.7K~10KΩ and a power of 2W-10W. Please refer to the wiring diagram on page 8 of the user manual. The potentiometer is connected to AI1, 10V, and GND, and just set F0-03=2.
I want to know that...
I was able to connect VFD to my controller successfully though is it possible to signal back to my controller if there is an error.

Also I’d like to add a breaking resistor to it though I couldn’t find anything in the manual about that.

How do I determine the resistance that I need for the breaking resistor?

The braking resistor used in this VFD model EM15-SP1S1-2d2 is 100w/70Ω.

The braking resistor is connected to the P+/PB terminal.
get error code
I get error code 40 now I went through all the setting and made sure they were right.  Now I get a error 0040 .

VFD displays error code 40, which means The load is too heavy or locked- rotor occurs on the motor. Also, The frequency inverter model is of too small power class. If the VFD can run normally after removing the motor, it means that your motor load is too heavy and the VFD is overloaded. We recommend that you replace it with a VFD with a 5HP capacity.
