Tips: The difference between two-wire and three-wire RTD sensors

    • Two-wire: Two-wire RTD sensors use only two wires to simultaneously complete the excitation current transmission and voltage measurement. They have a simple structure and the lowest cost, but their measurement results include lead resistance, which can cause the temperature reading to be higher. Since the influence of wire resistance cannot be eliminated, the two-wire system has low accuracy and is only suitable for short-distance measurements or occasions with low accuracy requirements, such as temporary experimental tests or low-cost applications.
    • Three-wire: Three-wire RTD sensors offset the influence of lead resistance by adding a compensation wire, two of which are of the same material and length for excitation current, and the third for voltage measurement. This design uses a bridge circuit or algorithm to eliminate most of the lead resistance errors, significantly improving measurement accuracy while maintaining a reasonable cost. The three-wire system is the most commonly used configuration in the industrial field, suitable for medium-distance transmission and scenarios requiring high reliability, such as PLC, DCS control systems, etc.
