Can a 5HP VFD Run a 3 Phase Motor on Single Phase?

Hi, I want to know if the VFD is actually rated to drive a 5HP three-phase load when powered by a single-phase input? I see this a lot—people say it’s a “5HP capable VFD” and “single phase input capable,” but then in the fine print it turns out the 5HP rating only applies when the input power is also three phase. Has anyone here actually done this successfully?

Jason, could you please tell us the rated power, current, and voltage of your 3 phase motor? And what is the available 1 phase voltage?

    1: 3.5kw 8.6A 220V
    2: 220V
That’s what’s on the motor nameplate.

Most VFDs can accept single-phase input, but you usually have to derate them—sometimes by 30–50%. A “5HP” drive often ends up being more like a 3HP drive when fed with single phase, depending on the DC bus and input rectifier sizing. This is my opinion.

Hi Jason, some manufacturers oversize the input section, so their 5HP units can genuinely handle a ~3–4HP motor on single phase without overheating. But you really need to check the input current rating, not just the horsepower label.

Dear Jason, If that is correct, then a 5HP drive will be okay; GK3000-2S0037. See specs, price, and you can order online by credit card at: https://www.ato.com/5hp-vfd
