Looking for a Magnetic Powder Brake for Variable Load

    Hi,
I’m looking at ATO’s magnetic powder brake (Link: https://www.ato.com/magnetic-powder-brake) with a hollow shaft and wondering — is it only suitable for holding position, or can it be used as a variable torque brake? My goal is to create a variable load for an electric motor test bench. Any suggestions?
    Thank you!

Zenobia, our magnetic powder brake provides constant torque. When it engages, it will brake and decelerate gradually, rather than stopping the shaft immediately.

Hi, if you’re after a truly adjustable load, a magnetic powder brake can work, but you need a controller to vary the current — the torque is proportional to excitation current. Without that, it will act more like a constant torque brake.

I think if you only need holding torque, the brake alone is fine. However, for controlled variable braking, pair it with a closed-loop current controller to precisely dial in your torque settings.

Thanks for your suggestions. It sounds like with the right controller, it can work as the adjustable load I need.
