Tips: What are Ra and Rz in surface roughness?

Ra and Rz are two commonly used parameters to measure surface roughness:

    • Ra (arithmetical mean deviation of the surface) is the arithmetic average of the deviations from the mean line of the surface profile within the evaluation length. Ra provides an indication of the average surface roughness and is commonly used to evaluate the quality of surfaces produced by machining processes. Ra is measured in micrometers (µm) or microinches (µin).
    • Rz (mean roughness depth) is the average of the five highest peaks and the five lowest valleys in the evaluation length. Rz provides an indication of the maximum height and depth of surface irregularities and is used to evaluate surfaces that may have deep grooves or high peaks. Rz is measured in micrometers (µm) or microinches (µin).

Both Ra and Rz are important parameters for evaluating the quality of a surface finish, and the selection of the appropriate parameter depends on the application and the type of surface being evaluated.
